Why a homemade hydrophone
The short answer is that the good ones cost more than the boat. The longer answer is that making one teaches you what it is actually measuring.
A hydrophone is a microphone that expects to be wet, which is the whole problem. Water is 800 times denser than air, and it does not care about the sealed, fragile, carefully-impedance-matched thing you lowered into it.
What it has to survive
- Being wet, continuously, for longer than you want to think about
- Pressure at depth, which rises about one atmosphere every ten metres
- Biofouling; a week of warm reef water grows a film on anything
The reason to build rather than buy is not thrift. It is that a commercial unit arrives as a black box that either works or does not, and when it does not you have nothing to reason about. A homemade one is a set of choices you made, and every failure points at one of them.
